What is the difference between 3D ultrasound and 4D HD 5D ultrasound?
3D ultrasound creates a single still image so you can see your baby’s features in one frame. 4D ultrasound adds real time movement so it feels like a short video of baby stretching, yawning, or kicking. HD and 5D ultrasound use advanced rendering and lighting style effects to make facial details look more lifelike. At My Little Pumpkin 4D in Pittsburgh, we typically start in 2D to find the best angle, then move into 3D, 4D, and HD style imaging when baby’s position allows.
Is 3D and 4D HD 5D ultrasound safe for me and my baby?
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and it has been used in pregnancy care for decades. At My Little Pumpkin 4D Pittsburgh, our elective keepsake sessions are designed for bonding and photos, and they do not replace medical ultrasounds or prenatal care. If you ever have medical concerns, always contact your OB or midwife first.
Do you accept insurance?
No. Elective 3D 4D and HD ultrasound sessions are not medical diagnostic appointments, so they are not covered by insurance. Our Pittsburgh keepsake ultrasound packages are self pay, with clear pricing so you can choose what fits your family.
When is the best time to have a 3D 4D HD 5D ultrasound?
The best time depends on what you want to see.
If you want a fun full body view with lots of movement, many families in Pittsburgh book between about 15 and 22 weeks.
If you want the clearest facial detail for 3D 4D and HD images, the sweet spot is usually around 26 to 32 weeks when baby has more facial fullness.
Later scans can still be beautiful, but space is tighter and results depend more on position and fluid.
How good are you at determining the sex of the baby?
Gender checks are typically most reliable starting around 15 weeks, depending on baby’s position and visibility. At our Pittsburgh ultrasound studio, we take time to confirm from multiple angles when possible. If we cannot confidently confirm the gender during your visit, ask us about our rescan options so you can come back when baby is in a better position.
How can I be sure to get the best possible 3D 4D HD 5D pictures?
The biggest factors are baby’s position, fluid, and timing. A simple tip that helps many families is steady hydration in the week leading up to your appointment. Also try to book during the ideal window for facial detail, usually 26 to 32 weeks. Even with perfect planning, babies sometimes hide behind hands, feet, placenta, or the uterine wall, but our Pittsburgh team will work to capture the best visible angles during your session.
What should I do prior to the 3D 4D HD 5D appointment?
Start drinking extra water for several days before your visit. On the day of your Pittsburgh 4D ultrasound appointment, eat normally unless your provider has given you different instructions. Some parents find that a small snack or juice about 30 minutes before helps baby stay active, but only do what feels right for you and your pregnancy.
How long is the 3D 4D HD 5D ultrasound session?
Session length depends on the package you choose. Most Pittsburgh keepsake ultrasound appointments run about 10 to 25 minutes of scanning time. Plan a little extra time for check in, getting comfortable, and reviewing your keepsakes.
Are family and friends welcome to join?
Yes. My Little Pumpkin 4D Pittsburgh is designed to be family friendly, so you can share the moment with your partner and loved ones. If you have a larger group, it is smart to call ahead so we can help you choose the best time and setup.
Will my doctor be contacted about the 3D 4D HD 5D ultrasound?
No. Elective ultrasounds are for bonding and keepsakes, and we do not send results to your medical provider. We do require that you are currently under prenatal care. Our ultrasound team cannot diagnose or provide medical advice, so if you have any concerns before or after your session, please contact your doctor.
Will I always get great images of my baby?
We usually capture beautiful images, but every pregnancy is different. If baby is facing your spine, tucked into the placenta, or covering the face with hands and feet, facial views may be limited. At our Pittsburgh elective ultrasound studio, we will focus on getting the best images possible of whatever baby is showing, and we will do our best to encourage a better view during your visit.
What will determine quality of the images?
Baby’s position is the number one factor. Fluid levels, placenta placement, and gestational age also matter. For example, babies who are snug against the uterine wall or placenta may be harder to capture in clear facial detail. Our Pittsburgh 3D 4D and HD ultrasound approach is to start by finding the best angle, then adjust technique and positioning to maximize clarity.
What can I do to improve the images of my ultrasound?
Hydration is the most helpful thing you can control. Aim to increase water intake starting about a week before your appointment. Booking in the ideal timing window also helps, especially for HD facial detail. If your provider has recommended any restrictions for your pregnancy, follow their guidance first.
What if we are not able to get images?
Sometimes we cannot capture the exact keepsake views you want because of factors outside anyone’s control, like placenta location, low fluid, or baby staying face down. If we cannot get clear 3D 4D or HD images or cannot confirm gender during your first visit, ask our Pittsburgh team about our rescan policy and what options are available for a return visit.
What if my baby is breech?
Breech simply means baby’s head is up and feet are down. Breech positioning does not prevent a keepsake ultrasound, but it can sometimes make facial views less predictable. If you know baby is breech and your main goal is facial detail, consider booking a little later so baby has time to turn. Many Pittsburgh families still get great images with a breech baby if there is enough fluid and a good viewing angle.
If I am overweight will I be able to get clear ultrasound images?
Yes, many parents with a higher BMI still get wonderful keepsake photos. Clear facial detail often improves later in pregnancy when baby has more facial fullness, so booking after about 30 weeks can help. Hydration and fluid clarity also matter. At My Little Pumpkin 4D in Pittsburgh, we will tailor the session to get the best possible images for your body and your baby’s position.
Do I need a full bladder?
No. You do not need a full bladder for our keepsake ultrasound sessions. If anything changes for your specific pregnancy, follow your provider’s guidance first.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive about 5 minutes early so you can get settled and we can start on time.
What do we receive after the session?
You will receive keepsake images and package based items from your session. If you have questions about what is included in your package, call us before your appointment and we will walk you through it.
Can I bring siblings or older children to the session?
Yes, siblings are welcome at My Little Pumpkin 4D in Pittsburgh. Many families love including big brothers and sisters because watching their reaction to seeing the baby for the first time makes the whole experience more memorable. We keep our studio calm and welcoming so even little ones enjoy the visit comfortably. If you have a large group, give us a quick call so we can plan the best setup for your appointment.
Do packages include digital images and video?
Do packages include digital images and video? What you receive depends on your package. Most packages include digital images delivered directly to you after your session. Digital video delivery is included in the HD Complete Pumpkin package. Live streaming of your ultrasound is also included with the HD Complete Pumpkin package at no extra charge.
